Indonesian conductor and composer Budi Susanto Yohanes
has been declared The Best Conductor in the 2011 Rimini International
Choral Competition, Italy - a recent addition to his achievements in
conducting career. He debuted as the conductor of Gracioso Sonora Choir,
a choir he founded in 1999. Since then Budi has been successfully
conducting and art-directing numerous performances, and acquired
prestigious awards from Germany, Spain, Italy, South Korea, and
home-country Indonesia.
Along with conducting, Budi has chosen composition as his niche. He carries out commissioned works from The Association for Music in International Schools, Tokyo Tohmon Glee Club, as well as many choirs from Indonesia. His compositions and arrangements have been published by Earthsongs USA, Carus-Verlag Germany, Singapore Choral Research Center, and Gracioso Sonora Choir. Gai Bintang and Janger are examples of his best-known compositions, which incorporate traditional Indonesian music elements.
A versatile musician, Budi has various choral experiences ranging from being a vocal instructor, art-director, and a singer himself. He also participated as a member of Asian Youth Choir in Japan, Indonesia, and Philippines from 2004 through 2010. His works and achievements in choral fields have qualified him as adjudicator and clinician in festivals and competitions. In March 2007, he was invited by Singapore Choral Research Center as a choral clinician.
Budi was born in 1979 in Blitar, an East Javanese town. Having studied piano only for two years, he is primarily a self-taught musician with talent, dedication, and strong-willed effort. Now as he earned scholarship from Korea National University of Arts, Budi currently lives in Seoul, South Korea, to pursue his bachelor degree in choir conducting.
